The explanation of mip-mapping at page 106 is not clear. The mip-mapping works in a case when screen pixel covers multiple texels and the mip-mapping technique is replacement of integration of covered texels. The good explanation can be found at the book The Real-time Rendering, Tomas Akenine-Möller. 

Changes at the post: the first edition of the post was wrong. I read a book before bedtime :)
